Crossroads of smart home devices: Either safe or dead

Driven by the increasingly sophisticated AI technology and hardware technology, the smart home industry is ushering in its “golden age”. The authoritative report pointed out that the potential users of smart homes in China have reached 100 million, and it is expected that the industrial scale will exceed 1 trillion yuan in 2020. The strong pace of development of smart homes, the huge economic potential, attracting all kinds of manufacturers influx. The deep integration of voice recognition, 5G and other technologies with smart homes makes smart TVs, speakers, cameras and other products more and more in people's lives.

Under the dazzling aura of AI and smart homes, there are less-known facts that cannot be ignored: Insecure factors are still secretly growing. If the AI and the safety caravan fail to keep pace, the equipment in the movie is invaded, and the lives and property of ordinary people are threatened by a similar situation. I am afraid that it may become more likely to enter reality. Only by taking precautions can our manufacturers and users not be as helpless as in the movie.

Low awareness, low investment, safety has become the biggest hidden danger in the smart home industry

The smart home market has great potential in the future. However, at the same time as the rapid development of the industry, the continuous explosion of product safety issues has aroused public concern about the use of smart devices and has also hindered the healthy development of the industry. Take the smart camera as an example. Last year, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China (AQSIQ) carried out monitoring of the quality and safety risks of smart cameras. The monitoring results showed that 32 batches of 40 samples collected from the market had hidden safety problems. Such a high hidden rate of people makes people shudder: Will I be the person who is under surveillance?

In addition to the smart devices themselves, the widespread use of network technologies has also spread cybersecurity risks to the smart home sector. According to the "Overview of China's Internet Security Situation in 2017" issued by the National Internet Emergency Response Center (CNCERT), traditional network attacks and risks are spreading to the Internet of Things and smart devices. According to the “Review”, there are 2440 security vulnerabilities in the security loopholes covered by the 2017 National Information Security Vulnerability Sharing Platform (CNVD), an increase of 118.4% year-on-year.

Smart home products use the family as their core use scenario. The uniqueness of the use scenarios determines the high security requirements and the users' high sensitivity and concern for product safety issues. Once the smart home product is exposed to a security problem, it will not only threaten the user's privacy, property, and life safety, but also cause incalculable losses to the manufacturer. The security issue has become the “top of Arkus” for the development of the smart home industry. Smart devices are facing a "re-development, light security", or "development and security" at the crossroads.

Looking at the development of smart home security, we can see that compared with the fiery industry, safety construction does not seem to keep up, and the degree of emphasis on safety is not satisfactory. Due to the complex security issues of smart devices, insufficient technical strength of vendors, high security costs of AI, and insufficient social awareness of smart device security, smart device security is faced with widespread weaknesses. The China Information Security Test Center has issued warnings that the current smart devices are more "emphasis on development, lighter security," and "no certification, no encryption, easy to tamper." At the same time, due to the lack of a unified security standard, the construction of smart home security still stays at the stage of “fragmentation”. Different manufacturers are fighting each other in their own fields, which also makes the solution to security issues more complicated.
